There’s more to a question than just an answer

Cream & jam or jam & cream?

I’m cream & jam, but so what?

Ask me more and I’d tell you it’s because…

· In the scone world cream is my butter

· It offers a firm foundation for the lashings of jam I like to pile on top

Interesting? Not really, but you understand my reasons, right?

But chat with me a little more, perhaps share a little of yourself and then I might tell you this…

Cream & jam is nostalgic heaven…my childhood family holidays in rural North Devon.

It’s the old mill in Kentisbury Ford, run by Joan & Ted (who were to become the adoptive grandparents we never had).

It’s the coloured bedspreads we couldn’t wait to reacquaint ourselves with – blue for me & my middle sister, purple for my eldest sister, yellow for big Brother number 1 and green for big brother number 2.

It’s snail races on the back track, brook jumping in the streams, marching through the fields, big brother at the helm, trespassing in the tiny village school grounds, just to be daring!

It’s new potatoes with mint, milk straight from the cow (green top I think), fluffy orange place mats, our battered old picnic basket crammed full of cream cheese and cucumber sandwiches and the obligatory grains of sand.

It’s sitting by the fire in the evening, learning card games with Joan & Ted (but don’t touch the scary dog), while my Mum & Dad had a well-earned rest next door.

It’s having my first cream tea, set on the hilly edges of Combe Martin. With a tropical jungle at the bottom of the garden, where many an adventure took place.

Cream & jam is childhood innocence, unconditional love and belonging.
